MUST HAVE Caravan Safety Essentials!

Essential Caravan Safety Products

There are so many different products and accessories you need when you first start caravanning (check out our list of 25 essentials here) that it can be easy to forget about the need for safety. Whether it's the tools to replace a flat tyre on the open road or put out a fire onboard, you need to make sure that you have everything you need to keep yourself and your caravan safe, no matter what happens.

In this Buyers Guide, we'll dive into our most essential caravan safety products that you need before you set off on your next big adventure.

Smoke Alarms

Probably the most essential piece of safety equipment both at home and on the road, smoke alarms will help you prevent dinner mishaps or electrical short circuits from turning into something far more dangerous. Even though most caravans are small enough to only need one smoke alarm, it pays to install a couple, especially if you have an ensuite bathroom, seperate sleeping area or any space behind a closed door where a fire could start without setting off your main alarm.

Gas Detectors

It's not just an open flame that you have to worry about. With many caravan owners preferring to cook over gas, knowing if you've got a leak in your lines is crucial to avoid the risk of an explosion or asphyxiation.

Recovery Kits

Sometimes things just go wrong and you can find yourself stuck, especially on some of Australia's rougher roads. When this happens, you need to be able to get yourself free, with or without the help of others.

Luckily, Australians' love of 4WDs has led brands like Bushranger to develop some seriously heavy-duty towing and recovery kits that will let you rescue even the largest touring caravans from a ditch or particularly muddy patch of country.

First Aid Kits

When you're away in your caravan, it can be easy to overlook those over-present essentials that you keep at home and a first aid kit is no different. For most caravan owners, a simple first aid kit with basic painkillers, sticking plasters and sterile dressings will be enough to treat your standard cuts and bruises.

However, if you're planning to head deep into the outback -- or are fond of more action-packed pursuits than reading under the awning -- then you will want to ensure that your first aid kit is well-equipped to handle more serious injuries and keep you comfortable (and safe) until you can seek proper medical attention.

Warning Triangle

A broken-down caravan can be a major safety hazard without the right equipment to warn other motorists of the danger. If you've pulled over to fix a flat or find yourself stopped on the roadside, a warning triangle is one piece of kit that can save you from a potentially devastating accident.

Older warning triangles simply had a reflective coating to advertise the danger but they weren't a whole lot of help during the daytime or whenever bad weather struck. To counter this, brands such as BriteAngle have developed active warning triangles that feature flashing LEDs to keep you safe, whatever the weather.

BMPRO SmartPressure

The easiest and most-efficient way to monitor your tyre pressure and temperatures, the BMPRO SmartPressure sensors can help you to decrease your fuel consumption during towing and reduce the risk of a rollover or tyre blowout on the road.

Part of BMPRO's SmartConnect range, the SmartPressure sensors connect via Bluetooth to monitoring systems such as the JHub, Odyssey, RVMaster & JAYCOMMAND, allowing you to check your tyre pressure and temperatures at a glance. Plus, with easy DIY installation, it only takes a few minutes to attach the sensors and take a smarter approach to caravan safety.
